A sworn translation in the Netherlands is made by a translator who is listed in the Dutch register of sworn interpreters and translators (Rbtv) and who attaches a signed statement that the translation is faithful to the original. Municipalities, courts and the immigration service ask for this form when a document is in another language.

Frequently asked questions
- What is meant by sworn translation?
- A sworn translation carries a statement, a stamp and a signature from a translator who took an oath before a Dutch court and is listed in the Rbtv register. In the statement the translator declares that the translation is complete and faithful. It is attached to a copy of the original, so the two stay together.
- Who can do a sworn translation?
- Only a translator who is registered in the Rbtv for that language pair. The register is public, so you or the authority can look the translator up at Bureau Wbtv. A translation by a bilingual colleague, or by an agency that does not use a sworn translator, has no such statement and is usually refused.
- How can I get a certified Dutch to English translation?
- Upload a scan or a sharp photo of the Dutch document in the order form, choose Dutch to English and pay online. A sworn translator prepares the translation and attaches the statement. Standard delivery takes 5 to 7 working days. A digital copy by e-mail is an option at €9.95; registered post costs €9.95 and is free from €299. These amounts exclude VAT.
- Can I do a certified translation myself?
- No. A Dutch authority accepts the translation because of the sworn translator's statement, and you cannot issue that statement for your own document, however well you know both languages. The IND, for example, asks for a translator sworn in by a Dutch court when a document is not in Dutch, English, French or German.
