Why have a sworn translation of your Residence permit made?

A sworn residence permit translation is legally recognised (Wbtv). Should an authority reject the translation after all, our acceptance guarantee applies. Our RBTV-certified translators deliver your translation with the official statement, stamp and signature — ready to use straight away for your application.

You need a certified (sworn) translation when an official body asks for your residence permit in another language and will only accept a translation with legal standing. In practice that means the IND, a gemeente, a university or a foreign authority. The translation is produced by an Rbtv-registered sworn translator, which is what makes it valid for official use. You receive the translation bound to a copy of your residence permit, together with the sworn translator's signed statement of accuracy and official stamp. The base price covers the translation, the sworn statement, the official stamp and our acceptance guarantee. Delivery and a digital copy are separate options, set out below.

What authorities require

A certified translation makes the content of your residence permit readable and official in the target language. An apostille is a separate certificate, issued by a Dutch court (De Rechtspraak), that confirms the authenticity of the signature or seal for use abroad. They are complementary steps, not alternatives: for use in another country you often need both, and the order depends on the receiving authority.

Practical tips from our experts

  • Upload a clear scan or photo of your residence permit, choose the language pair and any options, and you receive a fixed quote before you confirm.
  • A sworn translator then produces the translation, adds the statement and stamp.
  • You choose how you receive it when you order: as a digital copy by email (€9.
  • 95), by registered post (€9.
  • 95, free from €299), or both.

When do you need your residence permit translated?

The card is small, and the remarks that matter are printed on it in Dutch: whether you may work, for whom, and on what ground you are staying. The decision letter from the IND is in Dutch from the first line to the last.

An embassy or consulate

When you apply for a visa for another country and must show that you live in the Netherlands legally.

A bank or mortgage lender abroad

To confirm your right to stay and work here before it opens an account or assesses a loan.

An authority in your home country

For a marriage, a pension claim or a tax matter in which your Dutch residence status counts.

The IND or a municipality

When your earlier permit comes from another country and is not in Dutch, English, French or German.

What the translation covers

Tell us in the notes which authority asked for the translation. An embassy usually wants both sides of the card; a bank often wants the decision letter as well, because the card does not explain the conditions.

  • Both sides of the card, including the remarks field and the document number.
  • The IND decision letter, if you upload it with the card.
  • The sworn statement with the translator's stamp, signature and Wbtv number.
  • A copy of your scan, bound to the translation.

Does a residence permit need an apostille?

That depends on the country where you will use it, and on what you hand in. An apostille is not placed on a plastic card. For a letter or a certified copy, the receiving country decides whether it wants an apostille, a legalisation through a ministry and its embassy, or neither.

The Netherlands

A sworn translation of your residence permit by an Rbtv-registered translator is accepted by Dutch authorities such as the IND and municipalities.

Abroad

For use in another country the receiving authority often also requires an apostille under the Hague Apostille Convention, or legalisation for countries outside it.

Ask the receiving authority what it wants before you order. If it asks for an apostille, you can add one to the order for €99 per document, excluding VAT.

What does a sworn translation of a Residence permit cost?

A sworn translation of your residence permit starts from €48 excl. VAT per page. The exact price depends on the language combination and the number of pages. Upload your document for an instant quote — including the sworn statement, official stamp and signature.

A sworn translation of your residence permit is often required for official procedures abroad. Our RBTV-registered translators deliver translations that are legally recognised (Wbtv). Should an authority reject the translation after all, our acceptance guarantee applies.

The Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (RBTV) is the official Dutch quality register. Only translators who meet strict quality requirements and are sworn in at the court may register. This guarantees that your translation meets the highest quality standards.

Frequently Asked Questions about Residence permit Translation

Answers to the most common questions

Not for use in the Netherlands. You need one when an embassy, a bank or an authority in another country asks for proof of your Dutch residence status in its own language, or in English. Ask that office whether it wants the card, the IND decision letter, or both.

Standard delivery takes 5 to 7 working days. With the rush option that becomes 2 to 3 working days. For a translation between Dutch and English, an express order placed before 12:00 on a working day is dispatched within 24 hours; for every other order the standard of 5 to 7 working days applies.

A card is one page. From Dutch into English the first page costs €48 excluding VAT; into most other languages €77 excluding VAT. A decision letter of several pages costs more, and the order form shows the total before you pay.

Yes, if both sides are sharp and the whole card is in the frame. Photograph it on a dark surface without flash, because the hologram reflects. The translator needs the remarks on the back as much as the name on the front.
